Case Study

ArtSpan

Building the digital platform behind San Francisco Open Studios without asking a small team to carry technical overhead it could not afford.

DrupalNonprofitDirectories + EventsContent Workflows

For nearly a decade, EvenVision partnered with ArtSpan to design, build, and maintain the web platform behind San Francisco Open Studios, one of the largest public arts programs in the country.

The platform had to support artists, studios, visitors, donors, and staff all at once while remaining manageable for a small non-technical team running a large annual program cycle.

Results at a Glance

  • Migrated and upgraded a Drupal platform spanning more than 1,000 pages and over 100,000 artist and studio directory records.
  • Built structured systems for artist registration, listings, event promotion, public calendars, donations, donor engagement, and reporting.
  • Supported thousands of artists and studios, plus visitors, donors, and staff, within one connected platform.
  • Reduced administrative overhead and kept repeated annual program cycles reliable for a small nonprofit team.

Several audiences, one platform

The site had to serve participating artists, visitors exploring events, donors supporting the organization, and staff coordinating the program behind the scenes.

What We Built

  • Structured directory and event systems.
  • Artist registration and listing management.
  • Public calendars, fundraising, donor-facing tools, and structured reporting.

Why It Lasted

The partnership endured because the system stayed stable through repeated annual cycles and growing participation, rather than turning each season into a new technical scramble.

Structured data at city scale

ArtSpan's platform was not just a marketing site. It was a living operational system with large directories, event data, user-submitted content, and time-sensitive public information that had to stay accurate.

We built the architecture so that growth in records and participation would not translate into disorder behind the scenes.

Built for annual program cycles

San Francisco Open Studios repeats year after year, which means the platform had to support recurring operational patterns, not just a one-time launch.

That required durable structures, repeatable workflows, and editorial tools staff could trust during peak season.

A small team could run it

  • Tools for registrations, listings, and updates without day-to-day technical support.
  • Workflows that kept data consistent across a large and changing dataset.
  • A clearer public experience for participants, visitors, donors, and internal staff alike.
  • Structured reporting to support fundraising, compliance, and grant writing.

Why this work matters

ArtSpan is a good example of the kind of complexity EvenVision handles well: multiple audiences, public trust, lots of changing content, and a team that needs the system to stay practical over time.
